LEED professional credentials are a mark of excellence within the green building marketplace, illustrating that the credential holder has a documented, up-to-date understanding of the latest industry principles and practices. Every year, numerous professionals register for the tests as the first step in their journey toward earning a LEED credential. Are you considering taking a LEED professional exam, but are unsure where to start or which one to register for?
Green building is a holistic concept that starts with the understanding
that the built environment can have profound effects, both positive and
negative, on the natural environment, as well as the people who inhabit
buildings every day. Green building is an effort to amplify the positive and
mitigate the negative of these effects throughout the entire life cycle of a
building.
While there are many different definitions of green building out
there, it is generally accepted as the planning, design, construction, and
operations of buildings with several central, foremost considerations: energy
use, water use, indoor environmental quality, material section and the
building's effects on its site.
These elements make up the basic parameters for the different credit
categories within the LEED green building
rating system.
LEED acts as a framework for decision-making for project teams in all of these
areas, rewarding best practices and innovation and recognizing exemplary
building projects with different levels of LEED certification.
LEED (Leadership
in Energy and Environmental Design) is the most widely used green building
rating system in the world. Available for virtually all building types, LEED
provides a framework for healthy, highly efficient, and cost-saving green
buildings. LEED certification is a globally recognized symbol of sustainability
achievement and leadership.
LEED is for all building types and all building phases including new construction, interior fit outs, operations and maintenance and core and shell. Unsure of which rating system to use? Check out our interactive Discover LEED tool to get started; then, use the rating system selection guidance to make a final decision.

The LEED Green Associate credential designates individuals who
have a documented, up-to-date understanding of the most current green building
principles and practices. The LEED Green Associate is a foundational credential
and for many it is the first step before earning advanced credentials such as
the LEED AP with specialty.
You have two options to take your LEED Green Associate exam. You
have the option to take your exam either at a Prometric
Test Center or through a remotely proctored internet-enabled
(online) location of your choice using Prometric’s ProProctor tool.
The LEED Green Associate exam is open to all individuals. GBCI
recommends that candidates taking the LEED Green Associate exam have exposure
to LEED and green building concepts through educational courses, volunteering,
or work experience before testing.
250 $ for non members and $200 for members
There are many LEED certificates but you
should start by earning LEED Green Associate Certificate first then you choose
if you wanted to continue one of LEED apecialities..
The Green Business Certification Inc. (GBCI) administers LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design),
performing third-party technical reviews and verification of LEED-registered
projects. Dedicated GBCI technical experts ensure the building certification
process meets the highest levels of quality and integrity.
To earn LEED certification, a project team must demonstrate
compliance with all mandatory prerequisites and select a number of optional
credits to pursue. To learn more about the LEED certification process, please
visit the Guide to LEED
Certification.
USGBC does not certify, endorse or promote products, services or
companies, nor do we track, list or report data related to products and their
environmental qualities.
LEED is
a certification system that deals with the environmental performance of
buildings based on overall characteristics of the project. We do not award
credits based on the use of particular products but rather upon meeting the
performance standards set forth in our rating systems. It is up to project
teams to determine which products are most appropriate for credit achievement
and program requirements.
Although USGBC does not certify, promote, or endorse products
and services of individual companies, products and services do play a role and
can help projects with credit achievement. (Note that products and services do
not earn projects points.)
The USGBC Credentials page has information on how to register for the exam. Once registered, you’ll be able to schedule your test session at a nearby Prometric testing center.
Exam sessions are available
year-round. To locate your nearest testing center and view availability, please
visit prometric.com/gbci and select
“Locate.”
A candidate must earn a scaled
score of 170. The scaled score for all GBCI exams ranges from 125 to 200.
The scaled score is calculated by
taking the candidate’s raw score (total number of questions) and mapping it
onto a standardized scale between 125 and 200, with the minimum competency
threshold always mapped to a scaled score of 170.
Scaled scoring is used as a best
practice to manage and report the potential differences in difficulty across
different exam forms.
Candidates will receive the results
at the test center immediately following the test.
If your attempt was unsuccessful,
you may register again in the same way as initial registration. After three unsuccessful
attempts, however, you must wait 90 days before submitting a new registration
to GBCI.
If you fail your first attempt at taking the exam you may
register and pay again in the same way as the initial registration. After three
unsuccessful attempts within a 12-month period, you must wait 90 calendar days
before submitting a new registration and payment to GBCI. You must pay the exam
registration fee for each exam attempt.
The primary language for the LEED Green Associate exam is
English. The translation is offered solely as an aid to non-native English speakers
and is currently provided in Arabic, Brazilian Portuguese, Chinese, French,
German, Japanese, Korean and Spanish.
For candidates who elect to test with an available translation,
the exam will be presented with a split-screen. The English question and answer
choices will be on the right, and the corresponding translation will appear on
the left. The use of translators or foreign-language dictionaries during the
examination will not be permitted.

The
LEED® rating system has seven areas of concentration; Sustainable
Sites, Water Efficiency, Energy and Atmosphere, Materials and Resources, Indoor
Environmental Quality, Innovation in Design Process and Regional Priority.
Projects obtain credits in these areas to achieve certification.
Projects
pursuing LEED certification earn points for green building strategies across
several categories. Based on the number of points achieved, a project earns one
of four LEED rating levels: Certified, Silver, Gold or Platinum.
